Samuel Meredith (1741 – February 10, 1817) was an American merchant and statesman from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born in Philadelphia, he attended Doctor Allison's Academy there before engaging in mercantile pursuits. Meredith served in the Revolutionary War as major and lieutenant colonel of the Third Battalion of Associators in 1776, was promoted to brigadier general of Pennsylvania Militia in April 1777 before resigning in 1778. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
